UETR welcomes the European Commission’s new measures to support road transport sector amid the Coronavirus pandemic

UETR welcomes the relief package proposed today by the European Commission to help road transport companies to carry on at this very difficult time.

These are concrete measures addressing a number of practical problems encountered by road haulers due to the pandemic.

Provisions on the extension of professional certificates and licenses are key to allow operators to continue their activity at the international level.

The measure on financial standing will give relief to the many MSMEs which have been dramatically affected by the crisis due to reduction of goods to deliver and operational issues.

While a number of measures had been already put in place by Member States at the national level, the EC proposal now brings a coordinated and harmonized approach. Level playing field is key to ensure efficient and fair delivery of goods in the EU.

A number of issues will have to be further addressed, e. g. full availability of sanitary facilities to drivers in stations and rest areas along European motorways.

We also trust the EU Institutions will work on a stimulus package including additional EU economic relief specifically devoted to road transport companies, which despite being severely hit are doing their best to keep goods moving to the benefit of European citizens.

UETR hopes that the EU Council and the Parliament will adopt the Commission’s proposal as urgently as possible.
