30 Apr Energy price crisis: EC Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework published
The European Commission has adopted its Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), enabling EU Member States to provide targeted support to sectors hardest hit by the ongoing geopolitical and energy crisis.
The framework, allows governments to compensate road transport companies for up to 70% of additional costs linked to surging fuel and energy prices.
Moreover, a simplified option allows Member States to calibrate individual aid amounts on elements like the size and type of beneficiaries’ activities, a general estimate of fuel consumption in the sector, or other relevant proxies, rather than beneficiaries having to provide detailed proof of their actual consumption. Under this option, each beneficiary can receive up to €50,000.
UETR welcomes the initiative as a timely and necessary instrument to cushion the impact of the crisis on the real economy.
UETR stressed that small and medium-sized road transport operators are among the most exposed to rising fuel costs and supply chain disruptions.
UETR calls on Member States to swiftly and fully make use of the new framework, ensuring that support reaches small operators who are essential to maintaining Europe’s economic activity and supply chains.
Without immediate support, many small hauliers risk severe financial strain, with knock-on effects for businesses and consumers across Europe.
