UETR appreciates the EU Institutions’ efforts leading to a provisional agreement on the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR).
The deployment of an available, adequate and extensive alternative fuels infrastructure in the EU all over the key axis is one of the conditions for a successful green transition.
Provisions on urban dimension, interoperability, price transparency and standards on information are positive as technical harmonization, use of digital technologies and full and transparent information are important elements to address the issue of different payment systems, and the lack of adequate information for hauliers.
However, UETR has concerns about the gradual process and coverage targets agreed for trucks recharging from 2025 and its synchronization with other pieces of legislation e. g. ETS in terms of timeline and impact.
Adequacy is needed in terms of ultra fast charging and power level, ensuring that the infrastructure is able to provide the necessary amount of alternative fuels energy required to carry on their activities and meet the green deal objectives.
Energy mix and technology neutrality are also to be followed so that operators can rely on all sustainable energy sources.
UETR pleads for clear and precise check in the short term, to assess the state of the operational framework in light of operators’ needs, current market and energy prices context and challenges. Ambitious goals require ambitious action and tools.
