16 Dec EDPS calls for additional safeguards to better protect the privacy of professional drivers
5 October 2011 – The European Data Protection Supervisor has adopted today an opinion on the European Commission’s proposal for a review of the EU legislation on recording equipment in road transport, referring directly to the new dispositions on digital tachographs.
EDPS expressed several criticisms on the amendment to the Directive. According to the new text, in order to improve the authorities’ ability to control and combat infraction and to minimize the risk of fraud due to tampering, it will be introduced a system of automatic location detection and the possibility to remotely access to recorded data.
In EDPS opinion, the initiative could affect privacy of professional drivers, as it allows the constant monitoring of their whereabouts as well as remote surveillance by control authorities.
“UETR highlighted same concerns over the matter with its paper in response to the Commission consultation on tachograph two years ago: we welcome EDPS’ opinion sharing our position on road haulers’ privacy” said UETR Secretary General Marco Digioia.
